Networking & Social Events

Newcastle has a thriving community of HCI researchers, including Open Lab at Newcastle University, and Northumbria University particularly across Computer & Information Sciences and Northumbria School of Design, which has recently culminated in Northumbria University’s UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Citizen Centred AI (CCAI).

Citizen-engaged work is foundational to much of the HCI research in the North East of England. Since the Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Civics started in 2014, initiatives such as the Centre for Digital Citizens, DCitizens and Not-Equal all strive to put citizens and citizenship at the heart of digital technology. Recently Northumbria University was awarded a UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training in Citizen Centred AI to advance this citizen-led agenda into applications of Artificial Intelligence.

We are delighted to bring together established and early career researchers alongside students under the ECSCW banner, in a region highly engaged with civic technologies, to foster networking and collaboration.

Conference Dinner: Palace of Arts (Exhibition Park) Wednesday 2nd July

Join us for our conference dinner Wednesday 2nd July at the beautiful Palace of Arts in Exhibition Park, the perfect opportunity to mix and mingle with leading researchers, early career researchers and students from the region and in attendance at the conference. There will be plenty of opportunity to make new connections, catch up with old colleagues and continue those exciting conversations sparked by the daytime sessions.

“Critical Friend” Lunches

We will be inviting students and early career researchers to participate in “Critical Friend” lunch sessions on Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd July. You provide us with your research interests and areas of curiosity, and we’ll match you with other members of the ECSCW community who can offer fresh perspectives, constructive feedback, or even potential areas for collaboration. This is an opportunity to leverage the ECSCW community, discussing research ideas, methodologies and approaches with colleagues you might not meet otherwise.

Meet the Researchers

There will be representation across the conference from our different citizen-engaged projects and initiatives, providing an opportunity to meet and engage with academic and external stakeholders in a region highly engaged with civic technologies.
