Munich and around

We offer a quite intensive program from Monday to Friday lunchtime which does not leave you much time to go sightseeing 🙂 But if you can arrive early or stay longer, there are some things to do and see in Munich – Here a few links and recommendations.

Restaurants / Beer Gardens

As part of the conference program we will have lunches / dinners in

If you are looking for other places to go to for lunch or dinner here are some recommendations:

Some of you might want to visit a “real Bavarian beer garden”. You will get a glimpse of this when going to the social dinner in Augustiner Keller which is in the middle of one of the nicest beer gardens in Munich. Quite close (10min walk) to the conference site (Wednesday to Friday) is the Biergarten am Park Cafe. Other recommendations are Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm and Hirschgarten.

Museums

Beer gardens are great for good weather – but there might be some rainy days too – For this Munich provides a large number of museums. Just a few recommendations:

  • Deutsches Museum – THE technical museum in Germany – “From Aviation to Astronautics, from Atomic Physics to Chemistry, from Health to Agriculture and Food – and much, much more. We warmly invite visitors to explore 20 permanent exhibitions, spread across 20 000 square metres.”
  • Pinakotheken
Munich’s art district is a magnet for culture lovers from all over the world. The Pinakotheken are among the most important of the many museums clustered around Königsplatz in the Maxvorstadt district:
    • The Alte Pinakothek was built in 1836 and displays European paintings from the 13th to the 18th century.
    • The Neue Pinakothek opened in 1853 and focuses on 19th-century paintings and sculptures.
    • The Pinakothek der Moderne is dedicated to the era from the 20th century onwards.
  • Kunsthalle
With around 350,000 visitors every year, the Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung (in short: Kunsthalle München) is one of Germany’s most prestigious exhibition houses. Located at the heart of Munich (near Marienplatz), the Kunsthalle stages three large exhibitions a year on a variety of themes: from painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography and crafts, through to design and fashion. During ECSCW 2026 there will be the exhibition “HAIR – Stories of Power and Passion”

BMW World and Factory

Munich is the home of BMW – and there is an impressive BMW Museum in town and even the possibility to book a tour in the BMW factory in town – See https://www.bmw-welt.com/en/ausstellungen/fuehrungen.html for more information on this possibility.

Sightseeing

See a list of the top 20 sights in Munich at the website of the city government.

If you do not want to drive around (bus or tram) you can get a glimpse on this by walking from the conference location – Stachus, pedestrian area, Marienplatz, Viktualienmarkt. The final stop (Viktualienmarkt) again hosts a beer garden …
