Accessibility and Diversity

We are committed to ensure that all attendees are welcome during ECSCW 2022. Please let us know if you need any special accommodations that we could not anticipate to accessibility-diversity@ecscw.eusset.eu

On this page you will learn about:

  • – Accessibility
  • – Policy against discrimination and harassment
  • – Contacting the ECSCW 2022 conference Accessibility and Diversity chairs for help

ECSCW values the diversity of our community, and aims to be an accessible and inclusive conference. Attendees are encouraged to mention any requests for accommodation upon registration for the conference. If you have any questions or concerns about accessibility, or any requests for accommodation (e.g., captioning), please contact the conference accessibility and diversity chairs at accessibility-diversity@ecscw.eusset.eu, and they will work with you to address your concerns. Note that some requests may require advance notice, so please submit accessibility requests as far in advance of the conference date as possible in order to give us adequate time to prepare.

For more detailed information about accessibility at the San Francisco Convent, please phone the venue information desk at +351 239 857 190.

If there is a specific accessibility information you would like to see here, or if you wish to discuss any accessibility requirements, please contact the Accessibility and Diversity Chairs by email: accessibility-diversity@ecscw.eusset.eu

The deadline for accessibility requests is TBA (the conference early registration deadline). If you need support, please inform us of your accessibility requirements before this deadline. You can contact the Accessibility and Diversity Chairs by email: accessibility-diversity@ecscw.eusset.eu

Yes, the conference venue will be accessible by wheelchair. The San Francisco Convent entrances are wheelchair accessible (with ramps) and feature automatic doors. So if you have your own wheelchair and wish to bring it to an event you are welcome to do so. Inside the venue, the doors are not automatic; if needed, please contact a steward who will be pleased to open the doors for you. Upper levels of the San Francisco Convent are accessible by lift.

Unfortunately, the venue does not have wheelchairs available to borrow.

ECSCW 2022 sessions will be held in a single location, the San Francisco Convent, in room Almedina; thus, we do not expect conference attendees to have to walk a significant amount to attend sessions.

We ask that all conference attendees respect individuals’ identities. Please use their stated names and pronouns. This year, this information is included right on attendees’ badges. If you’re not sure – ask! Please review the expectations stated in the Policy against discrimination and harassment (see below).

The San Francisco Convent has accessible toilets within easy access of the conference room. Toilets are wheelchair accessible. Moreover, there is a female and male accessible toilet. The venue does not have gender-neutral toilets.

There will not be a dedicated babysitting service at the venue, however the San Francisco Convent has agreed to provide a room for children and their parents, caregiver or babysitters. There are local babysitting services that parents can contact to arrange for private services. Parents can contact Babysits, which is a platform that aggregates babysitters, where people can register and request the service. The babysitters who are registered in the app go through a selection process and are certified as able to care for children.

Yes, service animals are permitted within the San Francisco Convent. We remind all attendees that guide dogs are working animals, and ask that you refrain from petting, distracting, or otherwise preventing them from doing their job. We would ask that assistance dogs are clearly identifiable around the venue. Facilities are available for assistance dogs.

The San Francisco Convent has several secluded areas throughout the building where people can withdraw if they want to. In addition, there will be life streaming for those who need to take breaks in their hotel rooms during sessions.

If you need an induction loop system, please inform the Accessibility and Diversity Chairs as soon as possible by email: accessibility-diversity@ecscw.eusset.eu

In accordance with the legislation in Portugal and the San Francisco Convent, smoking is prohibited in all indoor areas of the venue.

During coffee breaks, conference attendees can expect light refreshments such as: coffee, tea, water, juice, pastries, fruits, nuts, and some of the special foods that Portugal has to offer, depending on the day. During receptions, a variety of options have been selected to accommodate the diverse dietary needs of the ECSCW community, and in consideration of dietary requirements indicated on registration forms.
For more specific questions or requests about food, please contact ECSCW2022foodallergies@gmail.com.

To access information about the layout of the convent, please refer to this page. The conference will take place in the Almedina room. The venue is wheelchair friendly and has elevator options to the upper floors. There are also accessible toilets near the conference room.

To get to the venue, please refer to the information page about the venue and how to get there.

Policy against discrimination and harassment

We commit to providing a nondiscriminatory, harassment-free, and accessible and pleasant conference with equity in rights for all. We want every participant to feel welcome, included, and safe at the conference. Moreover, we will do our best to accommodate specific needs such as accessibility, or dietary requirements. We cannot promise to solve every issue, but will try our best.

We aim to provide a safe, respectful, and harassment-free conference environment for everyone involved regardless of age, sex, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, (dis)ability, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, nationality, marital status, military status, veteran status, religious beliefs, dietary requirements, childbirth- and pregnancy-related medical conditions or childcare requirements. We also respect any other status protected by laws of the country in which the conference or program is being held.

We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants. Harassment includes but is not limited to overt and/or covert acts of:

  • – Verbal accusations, or bullying;
  • – Deliberate intimidation, stalking, or following both in person and online;
  • – Harassing photography or recording;
  • – Sustained disruption of talks or other events;
  • – Interference with a person’s participation or opportunity for participation;
  • – Inappropriate physical contact;
  • – Unwelcome sexual attention;
  • – Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behaviour.

We expect all interactions between ECSCW members to be respectful and constructive, including interactions during the review process, at the conference itself, and on social media. A response that the participant was “just joking,” or “teasing,” or being “playful,” will not be accepted. Anyone witnessing or subject to unacceptable behaviour should notify the Conference Chairs: chairs@ecscw.eusset.eu
